The city is full of buildings well over 100 years old. But, unlike their neighboring countries to the south and west, Uruguay has little available capital for restoring these old antiques. There is still time.
You have already seen this strange building, the Palacio Salvio. Constructed in 1928, it was the tallest building in South America. It style is Italian Gothic. Still an object of pride to the locals.
The city is full of smaller beautiful, old structures. Almost all are in serious need of restoration.

Many of these are for sale. Might be an interesting project for a bored, retired engineer?
